In a small room tucked behind the Target Center court, I was having coffee with a player who has been on 11 different teams over a 15 year career. Him and I have connected a handful of times over the past 5 years, and each time we do, we somehow both have gotten older since the last time that we did. As a few of our young fellas came through the space that we shared, he started laughing about how he gets up a little slower than the rookies all do, and how his minutes have gone away like his hair.
“I suppose this is how it works though” he said with a smile that came from a peace that people in the NBA are not supposed to have, which made me wonder how he got it.
I asked him how he’s handled all the hits that have come with a stretch like his—not just as a hooper but also as a husband and dad. He gushed for a moment about his wife and young girls. He showed me their photos and said:
“You can face what’s in front of you if you got good Love behind you.”
I knew what he meant, and I showed him the drawing above to prove that I did.
Over the past 12 months, it has only been the good Love behind me that’s kept me facing whatever’s come before me. From moving out of a job and into rehab, from out of rehab and into a new reality, I’m still here because Love stayed there.
